I created this doll by modifying outfits from the Sears catalog Spring and Summer 1957.  It's not perfect by any means but was a fun project to try.  I may make more of these catalog dolls in the future.  Not sure how well her hats will stay on.  

4th of July Paper Doll

I did it. I managed to finish this BEFORE the holiday!  The base is from a pinup found here.  She has 6 stylish red white and blue outfits.  The fonts used are Stars and Stripes, Look of America, and fireworks, all from dafont.com.  She was colored using various pens and markers. (sharpie, prismacolor ect)

Happy New Year everyone.  Just finished this single page paper doll today just in time for 2018!  Of course, I used a reference photo I found on the internet of the famous Kewpie character doll created by Rose O'Neill. When I was younger I thought the naked baby character was a tad creepy, but now I find the vintage doll charming.  My paper doll has 4 outfits, a party suit, pajamas, and two party dresses along with shoes and accessories.  I always believed Kewpie to not have a gender, being a boy or a girl so I included outfits for male and female.  The 'alcoholic' drink is more like a Shirley temple and the bottle of cider.  I decided on Kewpie as a 'baby new year' character.

Here are some pages scanned from the Paper Doll Gazette Issue 67 Number 2 1984 Volume XIII, and Issue 68 Number 3 1984 Volume XIV.  These newsletters were printed in black and white and feature  reproductions of vintage paper dolls along with articles.  These are not all the pages from the issues.

Part 1!  Here are ten pages of 1920s era scrap from newspapers, catalogs, ect featuring men, women, children, and even dolls.  This was purchased as a large lot from ebay.  Some dolls have bends, tears, rips, missing limbs, discoloration, stains, or musty smell.  Some still need to be ironed before they can be scanned. Some are in black and white and others in full color.

How to Draw and Paint Children

Here are some scanned pages from How to Draw and Paint Children by Viola French published by Walter T Foster.  The book is too large for my scanner so I used my portable scanner to scan the pages.  Not all the pages are scanned.  I do not know the date this was published, Amazon says 1986 but the artist died in 1978.  The book features babies, children of various ages, faces, hands, and many other helpful references.  Also, the book is fairly inexpensive.

Robert Best Barbie Paper Doll

Here's a little project I finished.  This is a Robert Best Barbie paper doll.  I used Robert Best's lovely Barbie designs and sketches to create a wardrobe for his basic Barbie doll.  The art is by Robert Best and I do not claim it as my own.  I only transformed the art into a new paper doll.  Mattel owns the rights to Barbie.  This paper doll has five pages which includes 18 lovely outfits.  All of the outfits have been edited from the orignal designs and shapes to fit the doll.  This doll is not for sale in any way since the artwork I used to create it is not my own.  I am not intending to infringe on any copyright by creating this doll.  I simply wanted to take art from an artist I admire and adapt it into a paper doll format.

Final outcome

I recently purchased a Cedar Wood doll with the intent of trying my hand at repainting.  I loved Cedar's wood texture and hair but hated her face.  First step is removing the factory paint with acetone.  Then I expieremented with pastels for lips and cheeks.  I tried using acyrlic paint for the eyes but found it sorta gooby and hard to smooth out the brush strokes.  I removed the paint and used water color pencil instead.  This is my first attempt at repainting.  I think I've learned a few things.  For example, I found it easier to work on one eye, then switch to the other eye, then go back to the first for layering rather then trying to do both at once.  I have not sealed the doll so I may strip the paint and try again for a better result.  The photos are not the best because I used my camera phone.

I found this holiday paper doll called Sugarplum Sally with some other paper crafts.  I don't know anything about her!  She has two outfits but no artist or date.

Here are some die cut girls featuring very small calendars.  Some have easel backs to stand up.  The bottom one has some flocking, embossing, and ribbon detail.  From the little I've read, these were often give as Valentine's cards or a at Christmas/New Years. There are no makers or labels on the back.
